All six hospitals in the province of Limburg are planning on working together when it comes to child diabetes, to improve care quality for this fragile group of patients. It is the first time in history that all six hospitals located in Limburg are working together.
Until the age of 18 children experience large physical and psychological developments. A chronic disease like children's diabets (diabetes type 1) can obstruct these developments severely. Prognosis can be improved with better and efficient care and by following the latest developments in scientific research. Children with children's diabetes are often isolated in their own environment due to the low relatively low amount of patients. In Limburg approximately 425 children suffert from diabetes type 1. No moren than ten children under the ages of six have this type of diabetes in the province of Limburg. These minimal numbers show that the need for specialists to work together in this is essential.
The alliance of the six hospitals follows the latest national and international standards. Participation of aZM/Maastricht Universitair Medisch Centrum also guarantees participation in scientific research to childrens' diabetes. This increase in scale also provides in better guidance, better continuity in care and the possibility to organize activities for specific age groups together with the union of patients.
