The Province of Limburg is providing a EUR 1m to the Maastricht UMC+ (cooperative authority between the university and the university hospital) for the development of a center of excellence in cardiology. The project will strengthen the cooperative relationship between the Aachen University hospital and assist further in the development at Maastricht.
The idea is to establish a Dutch-German hospital at the Avantis cross-border business site. And at the same time the development at Avantis is taking place, options will be investigated to develop top clinical facilities in Maastricht as an intermediate phase.
Leading up to this development, it is important to ensure that the cardiovascular knowledge infrastructure is up to scratch. The project will cost EUR 23m and will probably be financed by Maastricht UMC+ (EUR 8m), the pharmaceutical industry (EUR 7m), Brussels/EU (EUR 5m), the Dutch government (EUR 2m) and the Province of Limburg (EUR 1m). The project will produced 213 new jobs over the next five years and the knowledge produced will lead to new business which is important for the economy of the region.
The Province attaches great importance to the Cardiovascular Center and there will be focus on diabetes type-2 and cardiovascular disease. This affects Ten thousand people, and they will be surveyed in a worldwide, unique project that will last ten years.
