The Province of Limburg and the municipality of Sittard-Geleen are going to support a direct rail link between the port at Born and the Holtem North business park and NedCar. The new rail link will make train and truck transport between Holtem, Born, Limbricht, Limbrichter Veld and Hoge Veld unnecessary in the future.
The province and the municipality see an expansion of the A-2 highway - if the region has anything to do with it - as providing the ideal opportunity by 2013 of breathing new life into an old idea, at the same time as expanding the A-2 and the first move could be made by building the alternative rail link. The province wants to include the project in the next meeting with the ministry. Currently, a lot of transport goes to the port of Born via the Holtem-Limbricht-Hoge-Veld-Limbrichter Veld-Sittard freight line, and from there out to the rest of the country.
If there were a direct link between the port and NedCar, at a later stage, with a link near Nieuwstad on the Sittard-Roermond rail line, the current freight line could be removed from the housing areas. The current situation causes a lot of noise pollution in the area and the direct option would remove that.
