On September 3, the Minister and the committee responsible in the Dutch parliament decided to fund cross-border public rail transport in Parkstad Limburg. The Avantis line to the the cross-border science and business park, between Aachen(Germany) and Heerlen, is to receive EUR 9m; and the doubling of the tracks and the electrification of the line between Heerlen and Herzogenrath is to receive EUR 20m from the Dutch government. The Avantis line will run via the stations at Spekholzerheide, Avantis, Aachen-Richterich, Aachen West (RWTH University) to Aachen’s main station. The Avantis line will link Parkstad Limburg, Avantis, The RWTH campus and Aachen and is consequently of great importance to the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. The Dutch funding enables the Avantis link on the Dutch side of the border. A positive decision is expected on the German side in 2010. The Avantis line will then be scheduled for completion in 2013.
