The Erwin-Schrödinger Award (worth EUR 50,000) has gone the Juelich (Aachen Region) researchers: Martin Bram, Hans-Peter Buchkremer and Detlev Stöver from the Institute for Energy Research and to Thomas Imwinkelried, a Swiss colleague. They have developed an implant for the vertebral column, making use of a procedure used in fuel cell research. The implant material rapidly attaches itself to the vertebrae and provides the patient with pain-free stability. This means a new life for sufferers from disk problems and lower back pain. The researchers have patented a procedure to develop custom-made pores in the material, as used in high-temperature fuel cell technology from the field of Energy technology .
