The annual Martin Buber Award presented by the Euriade foundation goes this year to Dr Hugo Tempelman and Liesje Tempelman. For more than 17 years the Dutch physician, Hugo Tempelman, and his wife Liesje, were fighting a virtually impossible battle against Aids in the townships of Johannesburg.
The award will be made at the Euriade International Culture and Science Festival on Sunday, November 5 in the Aula Major of the Rolduc Abbey in Kerkrade.
In 1994 Liesje and Hugo Tempelman founded the Ndlovu Medical Center. Located in the township of Elandsdoorn, Mpumalanga. It currently provides healthcare services to approximately 160,000 individuals. Dutch, German and South African physicians are working hand in hand.
In cooperation with the artist Herman van Veen a new cultural centre – the Miracle – is being built in Soweto, giving hope and ideas to the five million people living in this urban area of Johannesburg, a full 1.2 million are HIV-positive. They were fully supported by institutes, artists and private people. In the summer of 2007 the Hugo Tempelman Foundation was raised in Berlin.
