Student Success in China

21-08-2009 om 18:22 by Maastricht Region Branding Foundation

On 31 August, Maastricht University will open the 2009/10 academic year at the Theater aan het Vrijthof. The theme of the ceremony is ‘New leadership’. In today’s rapidly changing world, there is a increasing need for new leadership – as the topical themes of the economy, climate and health bear witness. The keynote speaker is Marc van der Chijs, who graduated from Maastricht University in 1995 and has become a successful entrepreneur in China. As co-founder of China’s largest video- and podcasting site, Tudou.com, he is now mainly active as CEO of Spil Games and an ‘angel investor’ in Chinese business start-ups.

This year’s opening ceremony will pay special attention to students. For example, as part of a competition they can submit and defend their vision of leadership during the morning symposium on New Leadership. In addition, for the first time the student associations will take part in the traditional procession of professors at academic sessions.

In his speech, Van der Chijs will look back on his studies in Maastricht, in view of his current idea of leadership. Maastricht University prepared him well for a career in the international business world. However, he has several recommendations. More attention for entrepreneurship in the curriculum would be welcome, he says, for example by using entrepreneurs as teachers. Further, if it were up to him, there would be no more resits – after all, in business you usually only get one shot at things. In his vision of leadership, Van der Chijs mainly focuses on the effects of the internet and the social media. The huge increase in the accessibility of information makes it easier to run businesses, he thinks. Entrepreneurs would do well to follow the developments via the social media, but should above all keep a personal weblog. By sharing information with others, they get useful feedback in the form of ‘crowd sourcing’.
