Consortium accelerates growth of Chemelot Campus
The Province of Limburg, DSM Nederland B.V. and Maastricht University/Maastricht UMC+ will join forces in the further development of the Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen. The three parties will jointly work out a plan that should lead to reinforced growth of this campus and doubling of the number of knowledge workers. To realize this, the three parties today gave the impetus to the foundation of a consortium by signing a letter of intent in the presence of Dutch Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven and Sittard-Geleen mayor Sjraar Cox.

The parties involved want to develop the campus into Europe’s leading CHEMaterials site, a site boasting a unique position in Material Sciences and related Life Sciences. They envisage a site where... read more

YEAH LIOF! Students: 35 thousand euros for a business plan

05-03-2010 om 16:31 by Maastricht Region Branding Foundation

Studying and starting a business at the same time. Sounds nice, but if you haven't got a fat bank account, you'll have to find the necessary investment capital somewhere else. The Limburg Development and Investment Company LIOF is celebrating its 35th anniversary this Spring and offers the ten best student entrepreneurs a starter's pack worth 35 thousand euros. The contest is run on the liofyeah.nl voting site. Three Maastricht students - Billy van den Ende, Luc Lebens, and Hans Heijnen - have been asked by LIOF to organise the online contest. This is exactly what their company SoapBox does. Van den Ende: “Ideas that will score best? Green ideas, sustainability, and solid Internet-related concepts. But the contest is open to any products or services.” Students with brilliant plans may leave... read more

Construction of new AZM building underway

03-03-2010 om 20:32 by Maastricht Region Branding Foundation

Construction of the new building next to the Maastricht academic hospital has begun and funding has recently been approved.

The construction of the two towers alongside the existing buildings is made possible by the 'azMove' policy, in which the patient plays a central role. Effective patient care has led to the implementation of 'care lines' and care centres; in the new location, the hospital will become more accessible to the patient, care centres will be more recognisable and patient care more efficiently organised. The building and (re)accommodation plans will quickly turn this prospect into reality. With the construction of the towers, the hospital will gain 21,000 square metres of extra floor space. Currently, the outpatient clinics and associated departments take up 35,400 square... read more

Chemelot Campus of National Importance

28-02-2010 om 21:42 by Maastricht Region Branding Foundation

2009 was dominated by the economic crisis. A large number of projects on the Campus were completed, such as the new building for SABIC R&D, a large-scale renovation for DSM Resolve and the new Gate 2, but other plans were put on hold, such as the new accommodation for DSM Engineering Plastics. The ambition remained, however. Many R&D projects have been continued and the expansion of the Campus with new players is going well. New companies that contribute toward open innovation and growth are establishing themselves here, and now there is another glimmer of hope on the horizon. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is focusing upon six “Campuses of National Importance” and is investing in them. On the basis of a study carried out by Buck Consultants International, it has been determined that... read more

Intelligent cane, made in Simpelveld

31-01-2010 om 17:32 by Maastricht Region Branding Foundation

'The I-Cane Foundation', located in Simpelveld, 'wants visually impaired people to get the same opportunities as non-disabled people. It is our social responsibility to provide the visually impaired with mobility improving technologies. Mobility should not only be available to those who are so lucky to have full sensory faculties', states Huub Grooten, initiator of the I-Cane Foundation on their website.

The intelligent cane would considerably improve the safety, mobility and ability to do things independently of people with a visual impairment.

There already are several technological aids for the visually impaired for detecting obstacles and for navigation. These aids are however not geared to one another and make a strong appeal to the perceptual and cognitive skills of the user. With... read more
