Two-day festival for e-culture and creative economy in Heerlen

12-03-2010 om 14:11 by Maastricht Region Branding Foundation

Social Beta, centre for e-culture, is putting on a two-day festival for e-culture and creative economy. E-culture refers to the continually changing relationship between new information and communication technologies and the production and consumption of culture and the arts. The festival is made up of two events that will take place on 10 and 11 June in Heerlen. On Thursday 10 June TEDxEutropolis will take place and on Friday 11 June it will be the turn of i_beta, the second edition of the ‘Zachte G’ event.

Why a festival?
The Meuse-Rhine Euregion faces a large number of challenges in the decade ahead including the economic transition, the ageing of the population and the candidacy of Maastricht for European Capital of Cultural. New ideas for the economic, social and cultural aspects of this are very welcome. And the role of e-culture in this is not insignificant. The aim of the Social Beta foundation is to create a place for e-culture in this international region, because it believes that being part of knowledge exchanges is becoming increasingly important. Thought processes moreover that are inspired by e-culture should also form the basis for new (economic) models and connecting factors for this region. A central aspect in this is the term beta, a term that comes from software development. The realisation that this region is in beta, means realising that things are on the move. The way is clear, the development is not yet fixed. Beta also stands for working together to receive feedback and to thus create a better product (read: a better region), a better economic and cultural climate. The web platform for creative economy in Limburg, Zachte G, is a promoted post.

TEDxEutropolis → 10 June 2010 Heerlen
Social Beta’s mission in putting on TEDxEutropolis is to give a creative boost to the Meuse-Rhine Euregion. The event is organised independently under the world-renowned TED organisation. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment & Design and is known mainly for the speeches given by Al Gore, Bono and Bill Gates. The motto of the event is 'ideas worth spreading' and the theme is Eutropolis. In the Eutropolis concept the Meuse-Rhine Euregion features an open international (network) town of 3.7 million people. Ten internationally renowned speakers will give inspiring speeches – the so-called TED talks. We can already announce that Christian Nold, Daan Roosegaarde and Maurer United will hold a TED talk. More speakers will shortly be announced via www.tedxeutropolis.eu. Tickets can be obtained by filling in the questionnaire on this site. Based on the information gathered, the organisers will invite change agents (people who are already making or who will make a difference) from the world of business, science, culture and politics. TEDxEutropolis will also be broadcast in its entirety via a webstream via the website. Knowledge institutions are invited to organise their own TEDxEutropolis satellite event.

zachte g event_2010: i_beta → 11 June 2010 Heerlen
The Zachte G Event 2010: i_beta is the event about trends and innovation in the world of e-culture and creative economy. Activities will be organised at different locations in the centre of Heerlen all day long. The main theme is software notions where the emphasis is on concepts such as open-source, social media, co-creation and creative commons. One of the aspects that makes the event unique is that it will be co-designed by potential visitors. The visitors will be able to indicate via the www.ibeta.eu website which programme parts, speakers or workshops they would like to find there. They can also upload their own photos and ideas onto the site in order to participate in the design of the event. The basis for Zachte G Event 2010: i_beta is the virtual community of www.ZachteG.nl and its members that number almost 400 including photographers, designers, culture makers and artists. Since its inception, Zachte G has grown to become the platform for creative economy in the international Limburg region with a web TV channel, a webshop and a community. The Zachte G Event 2010: i_beta will explicitly connect the creative economy to the regular economy.
