Hogeschool Zuyd students have started their first research projects in Zuydlab at the Chemelot campus in Geleen. ‘This is a unique form of cooperation between an educational institution and the business community,’ said the Reader in Life Sciences, Paul Borm.
Zuydlab will grow into to a fully developed training center for professional research and development. There is a demand for low-threshold laboratory facilities; and, recent market analysis, headed by LifeTecZONe and NanoHouse, has demonstrated the need for it. This varies from short-term research for a few weeks to months. Gino van Strijdonck, senior lecturer in Chemistry and coordinator of Zuydlab, sees major opportunities for ongoing projects at Zuydlab that have been running in Heerlen for some time. At the lab, third- and fourth-year students can start their projects with programs from the business community and they will be able to link with the outside world.
